Koala Activity Monitoring: Koala Beach

Koala Beach Estate and the surrounding vegetated areas form a wildlife-sensitive residential development in Pottsville, within the Tweed Shire Local Government Area. In the early 1990s, the estate and adjacent habitat supported an estimated 30–40 resident koalas. Since then, the area has been the focus of ongoing monitoring to track changes in koala distribution and population trends. This project represents the sixth round of targeted koala activity monitoring, following previous surveys conducted in 2005, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2014/15 and most recently in 2025. Using the Spot Assessment Technique (SAT), we assessed koala activity at 20 permanent monitoring sites across both Council-managed and National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) lands. The project delivered updated activity data, spatial analysis and evidence-based recommendations to inform conservation management and guide future monitoring.
