Analysis of koala vehicle strike was conducted on behalf of the NSW Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) and Lismore City Council using data obtained from NSW government and Friends of the Koala (koala hospital). This study focused on select locations across Lismore LGA to assess the potential effectiveness of a range of signs, including vehicle activated signs and variable message signs. In addition to data on the location and number of vehicle-strikes of koalas, analysis of vehicle speed data was also incorporated for the three-year period before signage versus the three-year period during which signs were used. Measures of koala occupancy were incorporated to give meaning and context to the statistical analysis. The locations of vehicle-strike blackspots were individually assessed and recommendations were provided to support on-going mitigation efforts.
